What to Expect at Your Consultation?
During your otoplasty consultation with Dr. Nakamura or Dr. Mohan, we will discuss the surgery in detail so you have a good understanding of this procedure and realistic expectations about what results will be achieved. During this time, we will go over the risks and limitations of the procedure and address any questions or concerns you may have. A thorough examination of your ears will take place.
Photographs will be taken for reference during and after your surgery. We will also discuss your health history and medications/supplements that you currently take to make sure this procedure can be done safely. To ensure your complete comfort, you can tour our surgical facility. For any financial concerns, our patient care coordinator will be happy to go over the financial matters with you.
Typically, the otoplasty procedure takes between one to three hours to complete. This will be dependent on the amount of correction needed. For anyone who needs improvement to the size, shape, proportion, or placement of the ears, this surgery can help. If you have suffered injury to your ear that has caused an undesirable look, otoplasty can address that as well. An incision will be made behind the ear where extra skin and fat can be removed. Then cartilage is recontoured and brought into a new position. After this is done sutures will be used to close the incision. This procedure is done on an outpatient basis. You will need to find someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first day post-op.
We make sure that our patients are comfortable with each aspect of the surgery. We offer different sedation techniques and will recommend the best for each patient. Sedation helps to dispel any discomfort that occur as well as minimize bleeding. An otoplasty can either be done with local anesthesia and intravenous sedation or under general anesthesia. Your doctor will help you choose the best type of sedation for you.
Your ears will have an improved look, size, and symmetry after the otoplasty is completed. You will notice the results immediately which will continue to improve over the subsequent weeks. It is normal to feel some discomfort following the surgery which can be controlled with pain medication. You can expect to wear bandages for a few days following the procedure. This is to help protect your ears from any trauma or infection. You will be able to return home the same day. You may experience some discomfort for a few days. It is important to rest during this time. Most patients return to work within a week of the procedure. All normal daily activities can be resumed after your post-op visit here at Accent On You.
