Most people do not think to take care of their neck while they’re young, but unfortunately this is one of the areas where the signs of aging start showing first. Too much sun damage and drastic weight changes can contribute to a neck with loose skin causing it to look aged. A qualified plastic surgeon like Dr. Mohan can help you achieve a youthful, slim and smooth neck. During your consultation he will help you to decide if a necklift is right for you.
How is a Neck Lift Performed?
Neck lift surgery has become one of the most popular transformative procedures done in cosmetic surgery. Patients often look slimmer and younger after this procedure. During a necklift procedure, excess skin and fat deposits are removed from the neck region and the underlying muscle will be contoured to rejuvenate your appearance dramatically. This is a safe and reliable surgery that uses minimal incisions, leading to less noticeable scarring. Anesthesia is used during the procedure allowing you to be comfortable and pain-free. You will discuss aesthetic options with Dr. Mohan during the consultation; patients can choose between intravenous sedation and general anesthesia. Dr. Mohan will recommend the best choice for you based on your unique situation.
Depending on the level of change you hope to achieve; Dr. Mohan may choose to do a limited incision or the traditional neck lift. While doing the traditional neck lift, the incision will start at the hairline, on the same level of your sideburns and it will continue to reach the ears ending within the posterior hair. The tissue under the skin will then be repositioned and the muscles will be tightened. The skin will be re-draped and any excess skin will be trimmed off. A separate incision under the chin is often necessary for liposuction and the repair of the muscles.
Preparing for Your Neck Lift Surgery
Prior to surgery, patients will need to make some adjustments with their lifestyle for the weeks prior to getting the procedure. It is recommended that patients continue to eat a balanced diet, avoiding excess alcohol intake. It is also recommended that patients avoid taking any medicine that includes ibuprofen and aspirin due to its ability to prevent normal blood clotting. During one of the pre-operative appointments you will be given post-operative instructions to follow carefully for a successful recovery.
Different Procedures for a Neck Lift
Much of the time, the neck will begin to sag even before the other parts of the body. When this happens, then the easy solution to deal with these problems is a neck lift. The neck lift alone offers you a more youthful and overall slimmer appearance. Sometimes patients will combine a neck lift with a facelift for a more uniform appearance between the head and neck.
There are three types of neck lifts that address a variety of neck concerns:
This is the type of necklift that targets excess skin on the neck. The phenomena may be caused by a genetic disposition to this condition or have lost too much weight.
This procedure tightens up muscle bands by contouring loose neck muscles. The surgery is recommended for people who suffer from the dreaded ‘turkey’ neck which is the result of loose muscles or skin.
This procedure is done when there is too much fat on the neck. Neck liposuction is recommended for individuals who have concentrated areas of excess fat on the chin and neck but do not have the presence of loose skin.
Your Neck Lift Recovery
When undergoing a neck lift, the procedure can take up to three hours to complete and about 7-10 days to recover. If the neck lift is combined with another procedure, the recovery time will be different. Dr. Mohan will provide you with care instructions to follow before you are discharged from the operating facility.
