The Science Behind Microneedling for Acne Scars

Posted on June 16, 2025July 16, 2025 by Dr. Y Anthony Nakamura

If you’ve been struggling with acne scars, dark spots, or hyperpigmentation, you are not alone. Our expert team, led by the esteemed Dr. Yukihiro Nakamura, offers effective treatments that nurture and transform your skin. In this post, we delve into the science behind microneedling and how it can help you achieve smoother, clearer skin.

Understanding the Impact of Acne Scarring

Acne is a common skin condition that can leave lasting marks, including dark spots and scars. Understanding how acne scars form is essential to appreciating how microneedling works. When the skin is damaged and inflamed by severe acne (acne vulgaris), especially cystic acne, the body’s natural healing process can result in scar tissue (atrophic acne scars) and uneven skin tone and texture.

What is Microneedling Treatment?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy or skin needling, is a minimally invasive procedure that involves the use of very fine needles to create tiny, controlled punctures in the skin. This process works to stimulate collagen production and the skin’s natural healing process, encouraging the production of collagen and elastin, two crucial proteins that play a key role in skin regeneration.

The number of microneedling sessions required varies depending on the severity of the acne scars. Moderate acne scars will need fewer treatments than more severe facial acne scars.

Typically, to treat acne scars, patients need 3-6 sessions, spaced over several weeks, for optimal results.

Microneedling treatment for treating acne scars can also be combined with chemical peels and other aesthetic treatments for a full facial rejuvenation.

Why Collagen Matters

Collagen is a natural protein that provides structure and elasticity to the skin. When microneedling encourages new collagen synthesis, it helps to fill in the depressions left by acne scars, improving skin texture and promoting a more even skin tone. This makes it an ideal treatment option for those dealing with the aftermath of acne.

Benefits of the Microneedling Procedure for Acne Scars

At Accent On You, we use advanced microneedling techniques to address various skin concerns. But what are the benefits you can enjoy with the help of this unique treatment? Let’s take a look:

  • Improved Skin Texture: Regular microneedling sessions can noticeably smooth out rough patches and reduce the appearance of raised or sunken scars.
  • Reduces Hyperpigmentation: By promoting skin renewal, microneedling can help lighten dark spots and even out pigmentation caused by acne.
  • Minimally Invasive with Low Downtime: Unlike more aggressive treatments, microneedling is less invasive and requires minimal recovery time, making it a convenient option for busy patients.
  • Safe for all Skin Types: Microneedling works on all skin types and tones (even darker skin tones). However, it is essential to consult with your provider to ensure it’s the right option for you, especially if you have sensitive skin or active acne.

Tips for Enhancing Chemical Peel Outcomes in Arlington, TX

Posted on May 16, 2025July 16, 2025 by Dr. Y Anthony Nakamura

Chemical peels are a time-tested cosmetic procedure used to address a wide range of skin concerns—from fine lines and wrinkles to acne scars and uneven pigmentation. Professional chemical peels at Accent On You in Arlington, TX, can deliver transformative results, whether you’re seeking to smooth rough skin, reduce the appearance of deep scars, or achieve a more youthful appearance.

Why Choose Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels work by applying a chemical solution to the skin, which exfoliates the outer layer and stimulates the growth of new skin cells. This chemical exfoliation reveals smoother, more radiant skin and can dramatically improve skin texture, skin tone, and overall skin appearance. Different types of chemical peels can address various skin conditions, including acne scars, age spots, actinic keratosis, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and sun-damaged skin.

The Levels of Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are categorized into three main types:

  1. Light chemical peels (superficial peels): Often called a “lunchtime peel,” these use mild acids like alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) or beta hydroxy acid (BHA), including glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and lactic acid, to treat fine wrinkles, acne, and uneven pigmentation.
  2. Medium chemical peels: These medium peels typically use trichloroacetic acid (TCA) or retinoic acid to penetrate the middle layer of the skin, treating fine lines and wrinkles, rough skin, and age spots with noticeable improvements in skin texture.
  3. Deep chemical peels: Formulated with phenol and croton oil or carbolic acid, deep peels target severely sun-damaged skin, deep facial lines, and deep scars. These can significantly improve sagging skin, but typically require a longer recovery.

Pre-Peel Preparations

To ensure the best outcome, pre-treatment planning is crucial. Avoid direct sun exposure and discontinue the use of retinoids or exfoliating agents at least a week before your peel. If you’re prone to cold sores, your provider may recommend antiviral medication to prevent flare-ups on the treated skin. Also, disclose any use of birth control pills or history of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, as these may affect your results.

During Your Chemical Peel

During the procedure, a carefully selected chemical peel solution is applied to your skin. You may feel a tingling or stinging sensation, which is normal. The solution will eventually peel away the outer layer of skin, revealing the new skin underneath. Our team tailors each peel to your specific skin type and goals, whether you’re seeking a quick refresh or a more dramatic transformation.

Post-Peel Care for Optimal Results

Post-treatment care is just as critical as the procedure itself; while recovery for light and medium peels is minimal, the skin heals for five to seven days, and longer for deep peels. During this time, avoid sun exposure, wear high-quality sun protection, and resist the urge to pick or peel flaking skin. Moisturize frequently and follow Dr. Nakamura and Dr. Halani’s aftercare instructions closely. You may be advised to delay using makeup until the treated skin fully recovers.

Why Choose Accent On You in Arlington, TX?

Dr. Nakamura and the team at Accent On You are highly experienced in performing professional chemical peels safely and effectively. As a board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Nakamura understands how to optimize results while minimizing risks. When you’re ready to improve skin texture and smooth rough skin, book an appointment for chemical peel treatments and discover the confidence that comes with radiant skin.

When Will I See Results from Sculptra?

Posted on November 21, 2024March 11, 2025 by Dr. Y Anthony Nakamura

Sculptra is a unique dermal filler that can produce volume over time with long-lasting results. If you’re curious about Sculptra, our team, led by Dr. Anthony Nakamura and Dr. Sameer Halani, can help you learn more about how to rejuvenate your look. Here’s what to know about Sculptra and when you can expect to see results from your treatment.

What is Sculptra?

Aging is the result of a loss of collagen, the connective protein that gives your skin its youthful elasticity and suppleness. As collagen breaks down and is replaced more slowly by your body, gravity can begin to take its toll on your skin. The result is sagging and thinness in areas like the jowls, cheeks, and under the chin.

Sculptra is made with poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), an ingredient that can stimulate the production of collagen. PLLA has been used for decades in surgical wound healing, and when injected into the skin, it can produce completely natural volume. Traditional dermal fillers typically use a gel form of hyaluronic acid, a complex sugar that binds to water and produces instant volume. Although it can be effective, many patients prefer Sculptra’s completely natural approach.

What is Sculptra Used For?

Sculptra can rejuvenate areas of the face that begin to experience signs of aging. Some of the most commonly treated concerns with Sculptra include nasolabial folds, jowls, hollow cheeks, and marionette lines. Sculptra is also sometimes used in the backs of the hands where signs of aging can make them appear ropey, thin, and aged. Once injected, it can begin to stimulate the production of new collagen to plump the skin and provide better support, tightening laxity and creating more tautness. Because of the increased amount of collagen, you may also notice a more glowy, luminous quality to your skin.

When Will I See Results from Sculptra?

You might see some immediate improvement from your Sculptra treatment, but your best results will take weeks to develop. Collagen production is slow, so plan to wait at least 2-3 months to judge your results. For up to six months, your body will continue to make new collagen to replace the Sculptra product as it fades. You can undergo multiple Sculptra treatments if needed, but most patients enjoy results for up to two years with this long-lasting injectable.
