How To Choose The Right Breast Implant Size with a Breast Augmentation

Posted on May 03,2016 By Dr. Y Anthony Nakamura

If you are considering breast implants, you need to contemplate the appropriate size. It can be tempting to pick a very large size or to choose a size without determining how they may actually affect your life.

You should consider:

  1. Your current breast size. You must have enough existing breast tissue to cover the implant. Some sizes may simply be too large for your body. On the other hand, if you are undergoing surgery, you should choose a size that you will be happy with and won’t want to adjust in the future.
  2. Your chest and shoulder width. A small frame can’t support overly large breasts. Someone who is 5’2 and 110 pounds will typically need smaller implants than someone who is 5’10 and 165 pounds just because of the size of their frame.
  3. Your lifestyle. Large breasts can get in the way of some activities – running, swimming, bending over, etc. can be challenging. You should also consider, rightly or wrongly, that your breasts will impact how you are perceived by the public. Some women may feel uncomfortable with the attention that large breasts can bring.
  4. Don’t think about bra size. Many patients view implants in bra sizes – but a C cup in one bra is not a C cup in another – and you should not base your implant size on bra size. If you end up with a different bra size than you envisioned, but are happy with the size of the implants, that is more important.

You should also consider how your breasts will look as you age – and how they will affect your back and the rest of your body. Many women forget about the weight of larger breasts. You may even “try on” different breast implant sizes to get a better vision of how each size might look. Once you choose a size, it’s helpful to try on different shirts to see how the breasts fill out your top. It’s also important to try on sizes that you know will be too large or small to get an idea of what you don’t want.
